Grand Designs Devon House
AWB Associates provided the full range of landscape architectural services for this superb project in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Devon.
We worked closely with Sadler Brown Architects of Newcastle, and planning consultants Rural Solutions to gain unanimous planning approval for this highly innovative house and its associated landscape. As well as being in a visually prominent location in the AONB the chosen location for the new building lies within a protected hay meadow. Following a full and detailed analysis of the site and surrounding landscape, we lead a team including ecologists and arboriculturists to draw up a series of deliverable enhancements to the landscape, proving that the scheme would bring about a net gain in biodiversity.
The superb curving form of the Sadler Brown building gave us the opportunity to create a private garden which would not be seen fro the wider landscape, and furthermore we created a new access drive into the site with demonstrably low impacts. Our detailed studies and photomontage work convinced the AONB partnership, Wildlife Trust and planning committee that this great building would serve as a beautiful low impact addition to this cherished landscape.
The house is now built, and was featured on Channel 4 series Grand Designs in late 2017.
